Martian Impact Crater

A dramatic, fresh impact crater dominates this image taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASAs Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Nov. 19, 2013.
The crater spans approximately 100 feet (30 meters) in diameter and is surrounded by a large, rayed blast zone. Because the terrain where the crater formed is dusty, the fresh crater appears blue in the enhanced color of the image, due to removal of the reddish dust in that area. Debris tossed outward during the formation of the crater is called ejecta. In examining ejectas distribution, scientists can learn more about the impact event. The explosion that excavated this crater threw ejecta as far as 9.3 miles (15 kilometers)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Martian impact crater, captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Taken on November 19,2013, the image reveals a dramatic and fresh impact crater that dominates the scene. Measuring approximately 100 feet (30 meters) in diameter, this crater is surrounded by a vast blast zone with distinct rays emanating from its center. The dusty terrain where the impact occurred gives an intriguing twist to this image – the enhanced coloration highlights the fresh crater in shades of blue due to the removal of reddish dust in that area. The formation of this crater resulted in debris being forcefully ejected outward, creating what scientists refer to as ejecta. By studying how these materials are distributed around the site, researchers can gain valuable insights into the impact event itself. It is astonishing to note that during this explosive occurrence, some of these ejected fragments were propelled as far as 9.3 miles (15 kilometers) away from their origin point. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of Mars' dynamic geological history
