EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and poignant image depicts the moment of Jesus' last breath on the cross during the crucifixion, an event that is central to the Christian faith as described in the New Testament of the Bible. The crucifixion of Jesus is one of the most significant and well-known stories in world history, retold and revered for over 2,000 years. Jesus, the son of Mary and Joseph, was a Jewish preacher and teacher who gained a large following in Judea during the 1st century AD. He was arrested and put on trial by the Roman authorities on charges of blasphemy and sedition. Despite numerous attempts to save him, including an offer to release a prisoner during the Passover festival, Jesus was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The crucifixion itself was a brutal and public spectacle, intended as a deterrent to those who might dare to rebel against Roman rule. Jesus was stripped of his clothes, beaten, and nailed to the cross with large nails through his wrists and feet. He was then left to hang for several hours, during which time he is said to have spoken words of forgiveness and comfort to those around him. This image captures the moment of Jesus' death, with his head thrown back and his eyes closed in peace. The expression on the face of the soldier at the foot of the cross suggests a mixture of awe and sadness, while the other figures in the scene look on in shock and disbelief. The cross itself is a stark reminder of the brutal method of execution that Jesus endured, and the empty space where his body once hung serves as a symbol of the resurrection and the hope of eternal life that Christians believe he offered to all mankind.
