EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Hyder Ali (1722-1782), the powerful and ambitious ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in southern India, at the pivotal Battle of Pollilur on September 10, 1780. Hyder Ali, seated atop an ornate howdah (a covered carriage for elephants), leads his troops into battle with the determination and resolve of a seasoned commander. The year 1780 marked a significant turning point in the Anglo-Mysore Wars, as Hyder Ali sought to expand his territories with the aid of the French. The Battle of Pollilur was a decisive victory for the combined forces of the British East India Company and the Maratha Confederacy, led by Haidar's son Tippu Sahib, who had rebelled against his father. Hyder Ali, however, was fatally wounded during the battle and ultimately died on the battlefield, leaving the campaign to his son. The defeat marked the beginning of the end for Hyder Ali's reign and the start of the reign of Tippu Sahib. The image vividly portrays the grandeur and pageantry of the Indian army, with soldiers clad in colorful uniforms and armed with a variety of weapons. The presence of French soldiers, evident from their distinctive uniforms, underscores the significant role of foreign aid in the military campaigns of the time. The historical significance of this image lies in its depiction of a pivotal moment in Indian history, as well as the intricate details it provides about the military tactics, uniforms, and weaponry of the time. Hyder Ali's legacy as a formidable ruler and military leader continues to be celebrated in Indian history, and this image serves as a testament to his indomitable spirit and the grandeur of the Indian royalty of the time.
