EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment during the construction of the iconic Second Severn Crossing. The image showcases the intricate process of installing bridge deck units, with a specially designed launch gantry suspended overhead. Two workers can be seen standing inside one of these massive deck units, providing scale to the immense size and complexity of this engineering feat. The Second Severn Crossing, a joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and GTM, required four years of meticulous planning and hard work before its completion in 1996. This cable-stayed bridge stretches over an impressive 5000 meters across the River Severn, connecting England and Wales. Situated just three miles downstream from its predecessor, the Severn Bridge which opened in 1966, this crossing has become an integral part of transportation infrastructure in South Gloucestershire. The photograph not only highlights the remarkable machinery involved but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration that brought this project to life. It is a visual reminder of how civil engineering marvels shape our landscapes and enable connectivity between regions. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this image offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in British history – showcasing both technical prowess and architectural beauty intertwined on such grand scales.
