CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Children playing on a bouncy castle during an open day at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a joyful moment at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Greater London during an open day. In the foreground, children can be seen gleefully playing on a bouncy castle, their laughter filling the air. The vibrant balloons scattered around add to the festive atmosphere, creating a scene of pure childhood bliss. The construction of this remarkable hospital was undertaken by Laing Management Contracting between 1989 and 1993 on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. Built on the site where St Stephens Hospital once stood before its demolition in early 1989, this new teaching hospital stands as a testament to modern architecture and efficient construction techniques. Fast track methods were employed throughout the project's duration, allowing for its completion in less than five years. This achievement is truly impressive considering the scale and complexity involved in constructing such a vital healthcare facility. On May 13th, 1993, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially inaugurated this state-of-the-art hospital that would go on to serve countless patients over decades to come. This photograph not only captures a delightful moment but also serves as a reminder of how important it is for hospitals to create spaces where children can experience joy amidst challenging circumstances. It symbolizes hope and resilience within these walls dedicated to healing and care.
