EDITORS COMMENTS
Chamberlain Square, Birmingham: A Victorian Masterpiece Captured in Time This evocative photograph, taken by Bedford Lemere around 1890, showcases Chamberlain Square in Birmingham, a stunning example of Victorian architectural grandeur. The fountain at the heart of the square was erected in 1880 as a token of gratitude for Joseph Chamberlain's dedicated service as Mayor of Birmingham from 1873 to 1876. The design of the fountain was a collaborative effort between architect John Chamberlain and sculptor Barfield of Leicester, with the intricate mosaics crafted by Salviati Burke & Co of Venice. The fountain's central figure represents the River God, flanked by figures symbolizing Commerce and Agriculture. In the background, two imposing structures can be seen: Mason College and the Public Library. Both buildings, sadly, have since been demolished. Mason College, founded in 1828, was a pioneering institution for higher education, while the Public Library, established in 1841, was a hub of knowledge and culture for the people of Birmingham. This photograph offers a glimpse into Birmingham's rich history, showcasing the beauty and grandeur of the Victorian era. The intricate details of the fountain, the stately buildings, and the bustling activity in the square all combine to create a captivating image that transports us back in time.
