EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in British history - the royal opening of the Shire Hall, Berkshire County Council's new headquarters at Shinfield Park. In this snapshot frozen in time, Queen Elizabeth II and the Chairman of Berkshire County Council gracefully descend a flight of steps lined with eager Brownies and Cub Scouts. The significance of this event is not lost on anyone who gazes upon this image. Laings South London Region commenced work on constructing the Shire Hall in 1976, and after years of dedication and hard work, it was finally completed in 1980. The grand official opening ceremony took place in April 1982, graced by the presence of Her Majesty herself, accompanied by Prince Philip and Lewis Moss, Chairman of Berkshire County Council. As one's eyes wander beyond the regal figures descending those steps, they are met with an awe-inspiring sight: 5000 local schoolchildren lining the streets outside. These young souls clad in uniforms represent not only their innocence but also their hopes for a brighter future under the guidance of their leaders. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst formal ceremonies and prestigious events involving royalty and government officials, it is ultimately about nurturing childhoods and shaping generations to come. It encapsulates an era when tradition merged seamlessly with progress as England moved forward into a new decade filled with promise.
