Yutai Peak (Jade Terrace Peak), 1500s. Creator: Song Xu (Chinese, 1525-c. 1606)
Yutai Peak (Jade Terrace Peak), 1500s. This album of landscape paintings depicts the famous scenic areas located in and around the city of Wuxing in southeastern China. The artist, Song Xu, was not a native of that city, but must have visited it when he accepted the commission, for he carefully depicted all eighteen views and wrote comments on each of them. These places were all known for their natural beauty, but in addition, a number were distingusihed by their links to eminent historical figures and events. Unlike other artists of his time, Song Xu favored a painting style that was technically polished and focused attention on specific, realistic details. Such an approach was well suited to projects like this one, for which the artist was in great demand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Yutai Peak, also known as Jade Terrace Peak, created by the talented Chinese artist Song Xu in the 1500s. The artwork is part of an album that beautifully captures the renowned scenic spots surrounding Wuxing city in southeastern China. Although not originally from Wuxing, Song Xu meticulously depicted all eighteen views and even provided insightful commentary on each location. These places were not only celebrated for their natural splendor but also held historical significance due to their association with prominent figures and events. Distinguishing himself from his contemporaries, Song Xu's preferred painting style was characterized by technical precision and a focus on realistic details. This approach perfectly suited projects like this one, which made him highly sought after for commissions. The 16th-century ink and color painting on silk transports viewers to a time when nature's beauty intertwined with human history.
