EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait print showcases William Thomson, the esteemed Archbishop of York in 1878. Captured by renowned photographers Lock & Whitfield, this image exudes a sense of Victorian elegance and religious authority. William Thomson's distinguished appearance is highlighted by his bald head and well-groomed sideburns, which were fashionable during the 19th century. As an accomplished scholar, he obtained a doctorate in divinity from Queens College, Oxford before completing his treatise on the Laws of Thought in 1842. This intellectual achievement set him apart even before embarking on his clerical journey. Thomson's commitment to his faith led him to be ordained as a deacon shortly after publishing his groundbreaking work. Leaving behind academia, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving the Church and its followers. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this portrait, emphasizing Thomson's role as a prominent figure within Christianity. His presence exudes wisdom and strength that can only come from years of devotion to God's teachings. Lock & Whitfield expertly captured not just an image but also the essence of William Thomson - a man who left an indelible mark on both religion and society at large during the late 19th century. This print serves as a testament to his significant contributions while offering us a glimpse into history through their lens.
