EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a Wells Fargo messenger from their Express Delivery service via the Isthmus of Panama in 1875. Founded by Henry Wells and William George Fargo in 1852, Wells Fargo & Co initially focused on transporting gold from the west to the east coast of the US after the Californian Gold Rush. However, they soon expanded into banking and developed an extensive stagecoach network that dominated business in the West by 1866. In this image, we see a determined messenger standing proudly beside his trusty steed, ready to deliver important parcels and messages across vast distances. The wooden crate strapped to his saddle hints at valuable contents being transported with utmost care. The rugged landscape behind him serves as a reminder of the challenging terrain these messengers had to navigate during their journeys. This photograph is not just a glimpse into history but also symbolizes America's spirit of enterprise and innovation during the 19th century. It showcases how Wells Fargo played a pivotal role in connecting people and businesses across different regions, contributing significantly to the growth of commerce and communication. As we admire this remarkable piece captured through wood engraving, let us appreciate those who paved the way for modern transportation systems while acknowledging Henry Wells' and William George Fargo's visionary leadership that shaped one of America's most iconic companies.
