Washington Augustus Roebling, American civil engineer, 1883

Washington Augustus Roebling, American civil engineer, 1883. Roebling (1837-1926) built the Brooklyn Suspension Bridge which had been designed by his father John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869). The bridge, spanning the East River in New York, was heralded as one of the most important construction projects of the 19th century. When completed in 1883 it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. John Roebling died of tetanus in 1869 after his foot was crushed in an accident during construction. Washington took over as chief engineer, and saw the project to its successful conclusion with the assistance of his wife Emily after Washington himself was incapacitated by an attack of the bends suffered while working below the river bed. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Washington Augustus Roebling, an esteemed American civil engineer, in 1883. As the son of John Augustus Roebling, he played a pivotal role in constructing the iconic Brooklyn Suspension Bridge. Designed by his father, this monumental project spanning New York's East River was hailed as one of the most significant engineering feats of the 19th century. Tragically, John Roebling passed away from tetanus in 1869 after sustaining injuries during construction. It was then that Washington assumed the position of chief engineer and valiantly led the bridge to its triumphant completion with unwavering support from his wife Emily. However, adversity struck again when Washington himself fell victim to decompression sickness while working beneath the river bed. Despite these challenges, Washington's determination prevailed and he successfully saw through this groundbreaking endeavor. The photograph captures him in a moment frozen in time – a testament to his dedication and expertise within the construction industry. The black and white portrait exudes Victorian charm while also symbolizing America's progress during that era. This image not only pays homage to an exceptional individual but also represents an important chapter in American history. Through this print, we are reminded of Washington Augustus Roebling's remarkable contribution as a bridge builder and his indelible mark on civil engineering for generations to come.
