The War in Denmark: the Little Belt and Shore of Jutland, viewed from the Island of Funen, 1864. 'Hin[?]sgael Wood; Behrendt's Hotel, Middlefahrt; Damgaard...The probable termination of the war between Germany and Denmark may have taken from the subject of our present notice a good deal of its military importance. For some weeks after the fall of Duppel, and since the failure of the London Conference to put an end to the struggle, it was expected that the Austro-Prussian army, having already gained possession of the fortress of Fredericia, on the Little Belt, would attempt to cross that strait into the Island of Funen, or Fyen, where the remnant of the Danish army was collected...Fredericia...commands the navigation of the Little Belt, and its hostile occupation by the Germans must effectually shut out the insular kingdom of Denmark from all access to its Continental provinces. But it has always seemed doubtful whether any object of German policy could be promoted by an attack upon Funen'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history during The War in Denmark in 1864, showcasing the Little Belt and Shore of Jutland as viewed from the Island of Funen. The intricate details of 'Hin[?]sgael Wood', 'Behrendt's Hotel, Middlefahrt', and 'Damgaard' are brought to life by an unknown creator, offering a glimpse into the military importance of this strategic location.
As tensions rose following the fall of Duppel and failed peace negotiations, it was anticipated that the Austro-Prussian army would make a move towards crossing the Little Belt into Funen. With Fredericia under German control, access to the Danish mainland was cut off, leaving Denmark isolated on its island provinces.
The uncertainty surrounding Germany's intentions for attacking Funen is palpable in this image, with questions raised about the true objectives behind such a strategic move. Despite its military significance at the time, this scene now serves as a reminder of past conflicts and political maneuvering during this turbulent period in European history.
Through this historical snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to a pivotal moment during The War in Denmark when alliances were tested and territories were fought over with great consequence.
