Urak, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating ethnographic image captured by the skilled lens of A. Derzhanovskii, under the patronage of Winckelmann & Sons, for the groundbreaking work "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia). Published in Saint Petersburg in 1862, this two-volume set was commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. Volume 1 of this comprehensive work consists of 62 meticulously colored illustrations, including this striking portrait of the Urak people. The album provides a visual representation of the diverse ethnic groups inhabiting the vast Russian Empire, showcasing their traditional attire and unique cultural identities. An intricately detailed fold-out table and a colored-coded ethnographic map are also included, offering valuable insights into the population distribution and territorial distribution of these ethnicities. The mastermind behind this ethnographic endeavor was Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. Pauli's extensive research and dedication to documenting the rich cultural tapestry of the Russian Empire culminated in the publication of this remarkable work. The illustrations, produced by Derzhanovskii under the guidance of Winckelmann & Sons, serve as a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and the unwavering commitment to preserving the ethnographic heritage of the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century. This image of the Urak people, captured in 1862, offers a glimpse into the past, providing us with a valuable record of the ethnic diversity and rich cultural heritage that once flourished within the borders of the Russian Empire.
