Troops encamped at the entrance to the Keree Pass, north of Meerut, India, c1860
Troops encamped at the entrance to the Keree Pass, north of Meerut, India, c1860. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - troops encamped at the entrance to the Keree Pass, north of Meerut, India, around 1860. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which originated in Meerut and spread throughout Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a grave threat to British power in the region, leading to mutinies and civilian uprisings. It was only with the fall of Gwalior on June 20th, 1858 that British forces were able to contain the revolt. Known by various names such as the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny, this event is sometimes referred to as the First War of Independence in India. In this engraving from Charles Ball's publication "The History of the Indian Mutiny" we see soldiers stationed amidst a mountainous landscape. Camels stand nearby, serving as essential means for transportation during warfare. The monochrome depiction adds depth and intensity to this historic scene. As we gaze upon this print today, it reminds us not only of past conflicts but also highlights how events shape nations and their struggles for independence. This photograph offers us an opportunity to reflect on both colonialism's impact on countries like India and their fight for freedom against imperial powers like Britain's Raj during the 19th century.
