The town of Beyrout and Mount Lebanon - from a drawing by J. Lewis Farley, 1860. Creator: Unknown

The town of Beyrout and Mount Lebanon - from a drawing by J. Lewis Farley, 1860. Beyrout, Beirout, or Bairut - the Berytus of the ancients - is a fortified seaport and commercial town of Syria, on a bay of the Mediterranean. It is situated fifty-seven miles W.N.W. from Damascus, of which city it is the port...Beyrout was bombarded and taken by the English in 1840, the main object of the attack - the driving out of the troops of Ibrahim Pacha - having been soon accomplished...The situation of Beyrout is exceedingly beautiful, especially as viewed from the sea. The promontory on which it stands is triangular, the apex projecting some three miles into the Mediterranean, and the base running along the foot of Lebanon. The south-western side is wholly composed of loose drifting sand, and has all the aspect of a desert. The north-western side is totally different. The shore line is formed of a range of irregular, deeply-indented rocks and cliffs, worn into a thousand fantastic forms by the waves...The little port, now in a great measure filled up, lies between a projecting cliff and a ruinous insulated tower, called Burj Fanzar, which bears, like the rest of the fortifications, many a mark of British bullets'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The town of Beyrout and Mount Lebanon' is a beautiful 19th century drawing by J. Lewis Farley, created in 1860. The precise creator of this exquisite work, however, remains a mystery. Beyrout, also known as Beirut, is a historic fortified seaport town located in Syria, nestled on the Mediterranean Sea. It is approximately fifty-seven miles W.N.W. from Damascus and has been a significant commercial hub since ancient times. The town's rich history is marked by various invasions and occupations, including a notable bombardment by the English in 1840, aimed at driving out the troops of Ibrahim Pacha. The drawing masterfully captures the stunning beauty of Beyrout, with its unique location at the foot of Mount Lebanon. The town is situated on a triangular promontory, with the apex extending three miles into the Mediterranean and the base hugging the mountain's base. The south-western side of Beyrout is a barren expanse of drifting sand, reminiscent of a desert. In stark contrast, the north-western side boasts a rugged coastline, with deeply-indented rocks and cliffs that have been sculpted by the relentless waves. The small port, now largely filled in, lies between a projecting cliff and a ruinous insulated tower, known as Burj Fanzar. The tower, like the rest of Beyrout's fortifications, bears the scars of British bullets, a testament to the town's tumultuous past. This drawing offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the timeless allure of Beyrout and its breathtaking surroundings.
