This print titled "The Tiber, Tuileries Garden, Paris, 1859" captures the artistic vision of Charles Negre, a pioneering French photographer in the 19th century. Originally trained as a history painter, Negre received government support to create a series of fifty images showcasing statuary in Paris's renowned Tuileries Gardens. While the project remained unfinished, Negre managed to produce a collection of large-format glass negatives from which this unique photograph was printed. This artwork is one of four water sculptures within the gardens that portray various water deities. Through his lens and technical expertise, Negre brings out the intricate details and timeless beauty of this magnificent statue. Preserved through an albumen print process using wet collodion negative techniques popular during that era, this piece represents both France's rich heritage and Charles Negre's remarkable contribution to photography. Now housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, it serves as a testament to Negre's talent and innovation in capturing moments frozen in time.
