EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a haunting scene from Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy" illustrated by Gustave Dore in the late 19th century. Titled "Then, not to make them sadder, I kept down my spirit in stillness" this image depicts Count Ugolino and his sons and grandsons condemned to death by starvation in the Torre dei Gualandi. The powerful illustration portrays the anguish and suffering of these prisoners as they endure their punishment. Dante's epic poem follows his imaginary journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, offering a profound exploration of human nature and divine justice. This particular edition showcases Dore's masterful engravings that bring Dante's vivid descriptions to life. In this scene, we witness the tragic fate of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca and his family. They are imprisoned for alleged crimes against their city-state, left to starve within the tower walls. The artist skillfully conveys their desperation through intricate details such as skeletal figures with sunken eyes and emaciated bodies. This evocative image serves as a reminder of humanity's capacity for cruelty but also highlights themes of resilience and endurance in the face of unimaginable suffering. It stands as a testament to both Dante Alighieri's literary genius and Gustave Dore's artistic prowess in capturing the essence of this timeless narrative.
