EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Then, fasting got the mastery of grief" captures a haunting scene from Gustave Doré's illustrations for Dante Alighieri's epic poem, "The Divine Comedy". In this particular image, we witness Count Ugolino and his descendants condemned to death by starvation in the Torre dei Gualandi. As the others succumb to their hunger and perish, Ugolino resorts to an unimaginable act of desperation – he eats their bodies to sustain himself. Doré's intricate engraving skillfully depicts the gruesome nature of this harrowing moment. The artist portrays Ugolino with teeth firmly clenched onto a wretched skull, resembling that of a relentless mastiff unwilling to let go. The black and white composition adds an eerie atmosphere, emphasizing the horror and despair surrounding these tragic events. "The Divine Comedy" written between 1308 and 1321 by Dante Alighieri, takes readers on a symbolic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Doré's illustrations bring these vivid scenes to life in this late 19th-century edition published by Cassell Petter & Galpin. This print serves as a reminder of humanity's capacity for both suffering and survival. It explores themes such as crime, punishment, family bonds tested under extreme circumstances, and the depths one may sink when faced with insurmountable hunger. Through its powerful imagery and connection to timeless literature like Dante's masterpiece, this artwork continues to captivate audiences long after its creation in c1890.
