"...The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", illustrated by Gustave Dore, 1876. Creator: Adolphe François Pannemaker. "...The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", illustrated by Gustave Dore, 1876. Creator: Adolphe François Pannemaker

"And the rain poured down from one black cloud - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", illustrated by Gustave Dore, 1876. Gustave Dore...has designed about forty illustrations, which have been engraved on wood...and just published by Messrs. Adams, Hamilton, and Co. and at the Dore Gallery, New Bond-street [London]...Here the spell that had been thrown over the mariner for killing the albatross had begun to break, owing to his having blessed unawares the creatures of the deep; sleep had "slid into his soul;" a troop of angelic spirits invoked by his guardian saint (poetically embodied by the artist in the "black cloud") had brought down the blessed rain to slake his thirst, and are impelling his ship homeward. Mr. Dore is specially felicitous in suggesting the illimitable vastness of the ocean...The book owes much of its beauty and value to the great excellence of the wood-engravings throughout'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, illustrated by Gustave Dore in 1876, is a timeless masterpiece of literature and art. This image, created by Adolphe François Pannemaker, depicts a pivotal moment in the poem where the ancient mariner, having repented for his sin of killing the albatross, is released from the spell that had condemned him to wander the seas. The enchanting illustration showcases the mariner's ship, with its sails billowing in the wind, as it is guided homeward by a troop of angelic spirits. The spirits are symbolically represented by a dark, ominous cloud, from which the blessed rain pours down, quenching the mariner's thirst. Gustave Dore, a renowned French artist, has expertly captured the essence of the ocean's vastness and the mariner's profound sense of relief and redemption. Dore's illustrations for "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" were published by Adams, Hamilton, and Co. in London and at the Dore Gallery on New Bond Street. The publication of these illustrations marked a significant contribution to the literary world, as they brought the poem to life in a way that had never been seen before. The illustrations, which numbered about forty and were meticulously engraved on wood, added a new dimension to Coleridge's poem, making it an even more cherished work of literature. This image, in particular, is a testament to Dore's artistic genius, as he skillfully conveys the sense of hope and renewal that follows the mariner's penitence. The illimitable vastness of the ocean is beautifully captured, with its dark, tumultuous waves and the endless expanse of the sky. The mariner's ship, small and insignificant against the backdrop of the ocean, serves as a reminder of the vastness of the natural world and the insignificance of human actions in the grand scheme of things. Overall, this illustration is a breathtaking representation of the transformative power of redemption and the beauty of nature.
