The Next Invasion, 1860

The Next Invasion, 1860. Landing of ther French (Light Wines) and Discomfiture of Old General Beer. Earlier in February, England and France had committed themselves to the Treaty of Commerce. Under the terms of the Treaty, Britain could import French wines more cheaply, and this cartoon depicts Old General Beer, a rotund and florid man riding a cask of home brewed. He is looking in dismay at the advancing ranks of militant French wine bottles. Old General Beer is depicted as rural, and definitely not of the highest class, whilst the wine is disciplined and beyond the reach of the average labourer. The quote The next invasion refers to all the rumours during the previous year concerning Louis Napoleons supposed plot to launch an invasion on Britain. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 11, 1860

The Next Invasion, 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a satirical cartoon print that captures the political tensions between England and France during the 19th century. Depicting Old General Beer, a symbol of British culture and tradition, riding on a cask of home-brewed beer, the image portrays his dismay as he witnesses the advancing ranks of militant French wine bottles. The cartoon reflects the signing of the Treaty of Commerce between England and France earlier in February 1860. This treaty allowed Britain to import French wines at lower prices, posing a threat to the domestic brewing industry represented by Old General Beer. The contrast between him and the disciplined French wine bottles highlights their superiority in terms of quality and accessibility. Moreover, "The Next Invasion" alludes to rumors circulating about Louis Napoleon's alleged plan to invade Britain. These speculations had been prevalent throughout the previous year, adding an element of fear and uncertainty to this political satire. This monochrome engraving from Punch magazine serves as both social commentary and entertainment for its readership. It showcases how art was used as a medium for expressing public sentiment during this period. With its clever symbolism and witty portrayal of characters like Old General Beer, this print provides insight into historical events while also offering amusement through its exaggerated depiction of national stereotypes.
