The German Gunboat Panther, (1919). Creator: Unknown

The German Gunboat " Panther", (1919). On July 1st, 1911, Germany, without warning or explanation, dispatched the warship " Panther" to the closed port of Agadir [in Morocco], " to safeguard the persons and property of German subjects." As there were no German subjects or property to safeguard, a grave crisis ensued, exorbitant demands were made by Germany which were pressed with an insistence that compelled France to break off all negotiations. The incident created great bitterness of feeling in this country [Britain] and in Germany. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. I, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The German Gunboat Panther, (1919). Creator: Unknown This print captures the infamous German gunboat "Panther" during a critical moment in history. In 1911, Germany sent this warship to the closed port of Agadir in Morocco under the pretext of protecting German subjects and property. However, there were no such individuals or assets to safeguard, leading to a grave crisis that unfolded. The incident triggered bitter emotions both in Britain and Germany as exorbitant demands were made by Germany, forcing France to break off all negotiations. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the tensions that engulfed Europe during this period. Taken from W. Stanley Macbean Knight's book "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects" published in London in 1919 by Caxton Publishing Company Limited, this image transports us back to an era defined by international crises and escalating conflicts. As we gaze upon this monochrome depiction of the SMS Panther steamship floating on water, it is impossible not to feel a sense of intrigue about the events surrounding it. The unknown creator has successfully captured not only a physical representation but also an emotional essence within this historical artifact. This print stands as a testament to how transportation vessels like gunboats played significant roles during World War I – shaping destinies, sparking diplomatic disputes, and leaving lasting imprints on global history.
