"The Last of the Abencerages", by H. Tidey, from the exhibition of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, 1862. Engraving of a painting. Aben-Hamet, "the last of the Abencerages"...has returned to Spain as a travelling medecin to visit the palaces and tombs of his fathers, and to avenge them as far as circumstances may admit. After wandering a whole night about Granada he loses himself among the magnificent buildings of his ancestors...a young Spanish lady sallies forth, accompanied by her duenna, bound for the matin [church] service. The lady on seeing a handsome stranger evidently perdu [ie lost] takes compassion on him and shows him the way to the khan of his countrymen in the city. The kindness, but far more the extreme beauty, of the lady makes an ineffaceable impression on the susceptible Moor; and the lady herself is very far from insensible to the innate nobility and manly grace of the stranger'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Last of the Abencerages," a captivating watercolor painting by H. Tidey, as depicted in this engraving created by Mason Jackson in 1862, transports us to the heart of Granada, Spain. The painting was first exhibited at the New Society of Painters in Water Colours that year. In this evocative scene, Aben-Hamet, the last surviving Abencerage, has journeyed to Spain to seek vengeance for his ancestors and to revisit the grand palaces and tombs of their past glory. After a long and weary night, Aben-Hamet, disoriented, wanders amongst the magnificent structures of his ancestors' land. Meanwhile, a young Spanish lady, accompanied by her duenna, makes her way to the matin (morning) church service. Compassionate and intrigued by the lost stranger, the lady takes pity on him and offers him guidance to the khan (inn) of his countrymen in the city. The kindness of the lady, but more so her extraordinary beauty, leaves an indelible impression on the sensitive and noble Aben-Hamet. Intriguingly, the lady herself is equally captivated by the stranger's manly grace. This chance encounter sets the stage for a tale of love, vengeance, and the complexities of human emotions against the backdrop of Spain's rich history. Mason Jackson's exquisite engraving, based on Tidey's painting, masterfully captures the essence of this narrative, inviting us to explore the depths of human emotions and the intricacies of a bygone era.
