The Synod at Thurles - the Procession from the College to the Cathedral, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Synod at Thurles [in Ireland] - the Procession from the College to the Cathedral, 1850. Clergy in a...procession from the College to the Cathedral. As it was impossible to do more than select a part of the line, which must have extended at least a mile in length, our Artist has chosen that part of it which shows a few of the Bishops, the Abbot from Mount Melleray, the heads of the religious houses, and the commencement of the theologians, when passing through the crowd assembled on the road, as the procession entered the yard of the Cathedral, where the people knelt down to receive the blessings of the Bishops'. The Synod at Thurles: The Procession from the College to the Cathedral, 1850" is an evocative and intriguing photograph that offers a glimpse into the past of Ireland's rich religious history. The image captures a section of a procession that extended for at least a mile in length, as clergy members made their way from the College to the Cathedral in Thurles, Tipperary. The photograph features a group of bishops, the Abbot from Mount Melleray, and the heads of religious houses, along with the beginning of the theologians. The crowd that had gathered on the road to receive their blessings is visible in the background, as the procession enters the yard of the Cathedral. The ecclesiastical dress of the clergymen, with their long robes and hats, adds to the sense of reverence and deference. The photograph was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a visual record of this significant religious event. The people of Ireland, both men and women, are depicted kneeling in the posture of worship, demonstrating their faith and devotion. The power and influence of the Church in Victorian Britain and Ireland is palpable, as the clergy processionally makes its way through the crowd. This photograph is a testament to the deep-rooted beliefs and superstitions of the time, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices and traditions of the 19th century. The Synod at Thurles is an important historical document, and a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the role of the Church in shaping the lives of communities in Ireland and beyond.
