Study for the Head of St. Michael, 1633. Creator: Pietro da Cortona (Italian, 1596-1669)
Study for the Head of St. Michael, 1633. Pietro da Cortona drew this angelically beautiful face in a style reminiscent of the work of Renaissance master Raphael (1483-1520). Cortonas use of black chalk to develop extremely subtle effects of shading shows the technique at its most refined. He drew this sheet in preparation for a ceiling decoration, Saint Michael and Angels with the Instruments of the Passion, painted in fresco in the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella (better known as the Chiesa Nuova, or " New Church" ) in Rome, completed in 1633

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Pietro da Cortona's "Study for the Head of St. Michael" from 1633, a remarkable piece that exemplifies the artist's exceptional talent and mastery of technique. Inspired by Renaissance maestro Raphael, Cortona beautifully captures the angelic beauty of St. Michael's face in this drawing. Using black chalk, Cortona skillfully creates subtle shading effects that add depth and dimension to his work. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every stroke, showcasing the artist at his most refined state. This particular sheet was created as a preparatory study for a larger ceiling decoration titled "Saint Michael and Angels with the Instruments of the Passion". The heritage art captured within this image transports viewers back to the vibrant artistic scene of 17th-century Italy. Pietro da Cortona's contribution to Italian art history is undeniable, and this print allows us to appreciate his immense talent up close.
