Statue of Loie Fuller by Theodore Riviere, c1890s, (1903). Creator: Unknown

Statue of Loie Fuller by Theodore Riviere, c1890s, (1903). Loie Fuller (1862-1928) was an American dancer who pioneered modern dance and theatrical lighing techniques. Fuller performed at the Folies-Bergere in Paris in 1892. Her act was a huge success; she swirled long drapes around herself, extending her reach with poles, while being lit in kaleidoscopic colours and by spotlights. The flowing lines and glowing colours of her dance have been credited as an influence on Art Nouveau, and many prints and small bronzes were made of her dance. She described herself as a sculptor of light, and even Rodin praised her strange art of the future. Statuette in ivory and silver, cast by Susse Freres. From " La Revue De L Art Ancien et Moderne" - Volume XIV, July-December 1903, [Paris, 1903]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Statue of Loie Fuller" created by Theodore Riviere in the late 1890s. Loie Fuller, an American dancer and pioneer of modern dance and theatrical lighting techniques, mesmerized audiences with her innovative performances at the Folies-Bergere in Paris in 1892. Her act involved swirling long drapes around herself, extending her reach with poles, while being illuminated in kaleidoscopic colors and spotlights. The flowing lines and radiant hues of Fuller's dance have been attributed as a significant influence on the Art Nouveau movement. Consequently, numerous prints and small bronzes were produced to immortalize her unique artistry. Describing herself as a sculptor of light, even renowned artist Rodin praised her avant-garde approach. The statuette featured in this photograph is crafted from ivory and silver by Susse Freres foundry. It was published in "La Revue De L'Art Ancien et Moderne" - Volume XIV, July-December 1903 – a testament to its historical significance. Loie Fuller's impact extended beyond the realm of dance; she became an emblematic figure representing innovation and artistic expression during both the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. This remarkable image captures not only the beauty of Theodore Riviere's sculpture but also pays homage to Loie Fuller's enduring legacy as an influential performer who pushed boundaries through her extraordinary talent for combining movement with light.
