The Standard Bearer, Turned to Left, 1587. Creator: Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558-1617)

The Standard Bearer, Turned to Left, 1587. Around 1587 Goltzius drew designs for 12 prints depicting officers and soldiers in landscape settings, which were engraved by his pupil Jacques de Gheyn II. Goltzius himself engraved a related pair of prints, The Captain of Infantry and The Great Standard Bearer. A central figure in the army and civic guard, the standard bearer marked the position of the captain. At this time, the Netherlands were trying to oust their Spanish rulers and these prints were conceived as flamboyant expressions of military pride

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Standard Bearer, Turned to Left" by the renowned Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius. Created in 1587, this artwork is part of a series of twelve prints that depict officers and soldiers within picturesque landscapes. Although these prints were engraved by Goltzius' pupil Jacques de Gheyn II, the artist himself personally engraved two related pieces titled "The Captain of Infantry" and "The Great Standard Bearer". During this period, the Netherlands was fervently striving to liberate itself from Spanish rule. These prints were conceived as flamboyant expressions of military pride, symbolizing the central role played by standard bearers in both the army and civic guard. The standard bearer's duty was to mark the position of the captain. Hendrick Goltzius' meticulous attention to detail is evident in this print, capturing not only the physical features but also conveying a sense of dignity and authority through his subject's posture and expression. The landscape setting adds depth and context to the composition. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this 16th-century engraving serves as a testament to Goltzius' artistic prowess while reflecting an important chapter in Dutch history. It stands as a reminder of their relentless struggle for independence against oppressive rulers. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has masterfully captured this significant piece with utmost precision, allowing viewers to appreciate its historical significance and aesthetic beauty for generations to come.
