Solan Gannet, shot near Boston, 1854. Creator: Pearson
Solan Gannet, shot near Boston, 1854. We abridge the following description from Mr. Gould's valuable work on " The Birds of Europe: "The seas bordering the European shores are the natural habitat of the Solan Gannet (Sula bassana, Bris.), and nowhere is it more common during summer than on the rugged and precipitous coasts of Scotland, especially the Bass Rock, the isles of Ailsa, St. Kilda. &c...The flight of the Gannet is extremely rapid, and capable of being long sustained ; hence it traverses the wide surface of the ocean with comparative ease...On the approach of spring they return to their accustomed rendezvous...While sitting on their nest, which is composed of seaweed and other similar materials, they are so absorbed in the task of incubation, that they will sometimes permit themselves to be approached, and even handled, without quitting it: they lay but a single white egg..."'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Solan Gannet, shot near Boston, 1854," showcases a Solan Gannet, also known as the Northern Gannet, in its natural habitat. The image was captured by the skilled lens of Pearson, as documented in the "Illustrated London News" of 1854. The Solan Gannet is a remarkable seabird, native to the European coasts and most commonly found on the rugged shores of Scotland, particularly the Bass Rock, Ailsa, and St. Kilda islands. Known for its rapid and sustained flight, the Solan Gannet effortlessly traverses the vast ocean expanses. During spring, these birds return to their breeding grounds, where they construct nests using seaweed and other marine materials. While incubating their single white egg, they become so engrossed in the process that they allow close approach and even handling without abandoning their nest. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of this fascinating seabird, which was, at the time, a subject of great interest to ornithologists and naturalists. Pearson's skillful capture of the Solan Gannet's striking features and poise in this image is a testament to the artist's mastery of the photographic medium.
