Sketches from H.M.S. Challenger, by Mr. J. J. Wild: the Challenger in Cumberland Bay, ...1876. Creator: John Greenaway
Sketches from H.M.S. Challenger, by Mr. J. J. Wild: the Challenger in Cumberland Bay, Juan Fernandez, 1876....the Island of Juan Fernandez, the scene of Alexander Selkirk's sojourn from 1704 to 1709. The island is a steep volcanic ridge, extending from east to west a distance of about twelve miles, with a breadth of only a few miles. The highest peak, called by the Spaniards "El Yuuque, " from its resemblance to an anvil, rises to a height of 45000 ft. The south side of Juan Fernandez forms an almost vertical wall of bare rock...the ancient hiding-place of buccaneers, now leased by the Chilian Government to a breeder of cattle...'. The islands lie 670 km (416 miles) off the coast of Chile. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white print, titled 'Sketches from H.M.S. Challenger, by Mr. J.J. Wild: The Challenger in Cumberland Bay, Juan Fernandez, 1876,' is a stunning depiction of the Challenger in the tranquil waters of Cumberland Bay, located on the remote Juan Fernandez Islands. The Challenger, a British sailing ship, was on an expedition to explore the depths of the Pacific Ocean, and this image captures a moment in their journey as they stopped at the island. The Juan Fernandez Islands, lying approximately 670 km (416 miles) off the coast of Chile, are a series of steep volcanic ridges, extending east to west for about twelve miles and barely a few miles in breadth. The highest peak, El Yuuque, rises to an impressive height of 4,500 ft. The south side of the island forms an almost vertical wall of bare rock, making it an ancient hiding place for buccaneers and now leased by the Chilian Government to a cattle breeder. The islands are renowned for their historical significance, as they were the scene of Alexander Selkirk's sojourn from 1704 to 1709, inspiring Daniel Defoe's classic novel 'Robinson Crusoe.' The print, published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1876, offers a glimpse into the geographical features of this remote and rugged landscape. The Challenger's presence in the bay adds a sense of adventure and exploration, as the ship sails gracefully in the calm waters, surrounded by the dramatic rock formations and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
