Sir Walter Raleigh and his son, 1602, (1896)
Sir Walter Raleigh and his son, 1602, (1896). English writer, poet, courtier and explorer, Raleigh (1554-1618) was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who knighted him in 1585. In 1584-1589 he was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony in North America, but did introduce tobacco and the potato to Britain from the New World. Accused of treason by Elizabeths successor, James I, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually put to death in 1618. He is shown here with one of his sons, probably Walter (born 1593). Illustration from a work published by Boussod, Valadon & Co, (1896)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1602, where Sir Walter Raleigh and his young son stand proudly side by side. Sir Walter Raleigh, a renowned English writer, poet, courtier, and explorer of the late 16th century, was not only favored by Queen Elizabeth I but also played a significant role in British history. This image showcases the distinguished figure of Sir Walter Raleigh with his characteristic beard and noble attire. His son stands beside him, likely named Walter after his father. The bond between father and son is evident as they pose for this portrait together. The engraving captures the essence of an adventurous spirit that defined Sir Walter Raleigh's life. Known for introducing tobacco and potatoes to Britain from the New World during his unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony in North America from 1584-1589, he left an indelible mark on England's cultural landscape. However, despite his achievements and close relationship with Queen Elizabeth I, tragedy befell Sir Walter Raleigh when he was accused of treason by her successor James I. He endured imprisonment in London's infamous Tower before being executed in 1618. This remarkable print serves as a poignant reminder of both the triumphs and tribulations faced by one of England's most fascinating historical figures - Sir Walter Raleigh - forever immortalized through artistry and preserved for generations to come.
