EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern countenance of Sir Edmund Andros, an influential figure in English colonial governance during the 17th century. Serving as Governor of the Dominion of New England from 1686 to 1689, Andros faced significant opposition from the predominantly Puritan population due to his unpopular administration. The unrest reached a boiling point when riots erupted in Boston following the overthrow of King James II. In a desperate attempt to escape capture, Andros disguised himself as a woman but was eventually apprehended. Although he was sent back to England for trial, it never took place. Surprisingly, Andros returned to America and assumed office as Governor of Virginia from 1692 until 1698. The portrait showcases Andros' long hair and serious expression, reflecting his position as a statesman navigating complex political landscapes both in Britain and its American colonies. This engraving is part of Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier, published around 1880. Sir Edmund Andros played a pivotal role in shaping early American history through his controversial tenure as governor. His story serves as a reminder that even powerful figures can face resistance and unexpected turns on their path towards influence and legacy within their respective countries.
