This print showcases a Single Leaf from an Antiphonary, specifically an initial H[odie nobis] with The Nativity, created in 1471. The intricate details of this artwork reflect the artist's profound love for precision and beauty. As we delve into the image, we are immediately drawn to the entwined dragon gracefully climbing up the ascender of the letter 'h', demonstrating the artist's imaginative flair. Within this initial lies a breathtaking depiction of Christ's nativity, surrounded by adoring shepherds who have come to pay their respects. Above them all stands Christ himself, bestowing his blessings upon them while being serenaded by a chorus of singing angels that symbolize heavenly realms. The leaf is part of a set of choir books commissioned for Siena's Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala by Niccolo Ricoveri, as indicated by his coat of arms at the bottom. This remarkable piece was crafted by Benvenuto di Giovanni, an Italian artist known for his mastery in ink and tempera techniques. Dating back to the 15th century, this artifact holds immense historical significance and offers us a glimpse into Italy's rich artistic heritage.
