The Shore at Lake Forest, 1874. Creator: W. J. Linton
The Shore at Lake Forest, 1874. Coastline on Lake Michigan, Illinois, USA. On the way northward the shore of the lake assumes extraordinary forms, especially at a suburb of Chicago called Lake Forest...the constantly encroaching surf has worn it into curious columns and peaks, some of them twisted and seamed in the most astonishing fashion. The forms are constantly changing under the action of the water, and...after a gale, during which the surf has been very high, the appearance of the shore is almost completely changed...The narrow line of sandy beach is often strewed with wrecked trees that have been torn from their beds and still hold their leaves. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

The Shore at Lake Forest, 1874
EDITORS COMMENTS
captures the captivating beauty and ever-changing nature of the coastline on Lake Michigan in Illinois, USA. This remarkable print by W. J. Linton showcases the extraordinary forms that have been sculpted by the constantly encroaching surf over time. Located in a suburb of Chicago called Lake Forest, this stretch of shoreline is known for its twisted columns and peaks, created through years of erosion and water action. The landscape undergoes constant transformation, particularly after powerful gales when the high surf dramatically alters its appearance. The narrow sandy beach is often strewn with remnants of wrecked trees torn from their beds but still clinging to their leaves. These driftwood remnants add an intriguing element to the scenery, highlighting both the power and fragility of nature's forces. Linton's photograph is part of "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" a comprehensive portrayal of America's natural wonders during the 19th century. His skillful engraving brings out every intricate detail while capturing the essence of this unique location. "The Shore at Lake Forest" serves as a reminder that even within bustling urban areas like Chicago, there are hidden gems where one can witness awe-inspiring landscapes shaped by natural elements. It invites viewers to appreciate not only the grandeur but also the delicate balance between human presence and untamed wilderness found along our coastlines.
