"Sheep", by Morland, in the International Exhibition, 1862. Creator: W Thomas. "Sheep", by Morland, in the International Exhibition, 1862. Creator: W Thomas

"Sheep", by Morland, in the International Exhibition, 1862. There is no painter of the English school, with the exception of Gainsborough, who could have treated so simple a subject with such true feeling for rustic nature, such skill and harmony of arrangement, and such consummate facility of handling as Morland has shown in the beautiful little picture we have engraved. Morland's works, like those of Gainsborough, are rather sketches than finished pictures; but this one has, with all the charm of a sketch, none of the carelessness and slovenliness which too often disfigure the painter's works. This little gem has also what is still more rarely found in Morland's landscapes...a lovely, warm, mellow, golden tone suffusing the foreground, the sheep, and the oak, tingeing the limpid atmosphere, and flushing the solitary cloud with the radiance and colour of the chrysophrase...[This painting is] only one of some 4000 works which Morland in a short life dashed off, with perhaps unparalleled rapidity...the whole history of the British school does not furnish another instance of a painter with so deplorable a story of a life passed in almost daily dissipation and closed at forty by paralysis in a sponging-house'. Sheep by Morland

EDITORS COMMENTS
at the International Exhibition of 1862: A Masterpiece of Rustic Charm and Rapid Brushstrokes In the hallowed halls of the International Exhibition of 1862, one small yet profoundly impactful painting stood out among the crowd - "Sheep by Morland," a masterpiece by the English artist, Richard Wilson Morland. Captured in this enchanting work is the essence of rural life, a testament to Morland's unparalleled ability to infuse deep emotion and harmony into the simplest of subjects. The painting, skillfully rendered by W. Thomas, showcases Morland's unrivaled connection to nature and his innate understanding of rustic charm. With the exception of Thomas Gainsborough, no other painter of the English school could have breathed such life into a humble scene of sheep grazing in an oak-studded meadow. Morland's works, much like those of Gainsborough, possess a sketch-like quality, yet this piece transcends the carelessness often associated with such works. Instead, it offers a warm, mellow, golden tone that permeates the foreground, the sheep, and the oak, casting a gentle glow over the entire scene. Morland's prolific career saw him produce an estimated 4000 works in his short life, each one executed with remarkable speed and consummate skill. Yet, even among this impressive body of work, "Sheep by Morland" stands out for its exquisite balance of charm and technical prowess. The painting's enduring allure is a poignant reminder of Morland's remarkable talent and the profound impact he left on the British art scene, despite a life marked by daily dissipation and an untimely demise in a sponging-house at the age of forty.
