Senator George Ellis Pugh of Ohio, c.1857. Photographing prominent politicians or other celebrities was an effective advertisement for the quality and prestige of a portrait studio. Whitehurst Studio opened in 1849 and soon had galleries in 12 cities, including Cincinnati, producing 30, 000 daguerreotypes a year. In 1857 its Washington branch advertised it had photographed the entire Congress. To outflank competition from cheaper operators, Whitehurst, in1854, became a pioneer in America in the production of paper photographs. This is a rare example of an American salted paper print, one of the early paper print processes quickly succeeded by albumen prints. Pugh, a Cincinnati lawyer, represented Ohio in the US Senate from 1855 to 1861

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Senator George Ellis Pugh of Ohio, taken around 1857 by the renowned Whitehurst Studio. Known for their exceptional quality and prestige, portrait studios often photographed prominent politicians and celebrities as a means of advertising their services. Established in 1849, Whitehurst Studio quickly expanded to twelve cities across America, including Cincinnati, where they produced an impressive 30,000 daguerreotypes annually. In an attempt to surpass competition from more affordable operators, Whitehurst Studio pioneered the production of paper photographs in America back in 1854. This particular image is a rare example of an American salted paper print—a technique that was soon replaced by albumen prints. Senator George Ellis Pugh was not only a distinguished politician but also a successful lawyer based in Cincinnati. He served as Ohio's representative in the US Senate from 1855 to 1861. His dignified presence captured through this historic photograph reflects his prominence during this pivotal period in American history. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art and attributed to Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print serves as both a visual testament to Senator Pugh's legacy and a valuable artifact showcasing the early advancements made within the field of photography during the mid-19th century.
