Scotland for Ever; the charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo, 18 June 1815

Scotland for Ever ; the charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo, 18 June 1815. The attack by the Royal Scots Greys cavalry regiment on the French 45th infantry was immortalised in this famous painting of 1881 by Lady Elizabeth Butler (1846-1933). The wife of a general as well as a popular Victorian painter, she persuaded the commander of the regiment to reconstruct the charge so she could make the painting. Some military historians doubt that the action actually took the form of the spectacular headlong charge depicted in the picture. What is known however is that the Scots Greys overpursued the French infantry, became split into disorganised small groups, and suffered heavy casualties at the hands of French cavalry formations before they were able to regain the British lines

EDITORS COMMENTS
Scotland for Ever; the charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo, 18 June 1815. This iconic print captures a pivotal moment in history, immortalized by Lady Elizabeth Butler's famous painting in 1881. The Royal Scots Greys cavalry regiment fearlessly charges towards the French 45th infantry during the Battle of Waterloo. Lady Elizabeth Butler, wife of a general and renowned Victorian painter, convinced the regiment's commander to recreate this historic charge so she could accurately depict it on canvas. While some military historians question the exact details portrayed in her artwork, what remains undeniable is the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by these Scottish soldiers. As depicted in this powerful image, the Scots Greys valiantly pursued their enemy but became disorganized and suffered heavy casualties from French cavalry formations before regaining British lines. The weathered faces of these courageous men reflect their determination as they wield swords with unwavering resolve. The grey horses charging alongside them symbolize both strength and speed, embodying Scotland's indomitable spirit on that fateful day. Against a backdrop of ominous clouds, this scene encapsulates not only a battle but also an enduring metaphor for patriotism and national pride. Elizabeth Butler's print serves as a testament to those who fought bravely under challenging circumstances during one of history's most significant conflicts – where courage clashed with chaos on Waterloo's battlefield.
