Schleswig-Holstein War - Plan of Friedrichstadt, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Schleswig-Holstein War - Plan of Friedrichstadt, [now in Germany], 1850. Map of the town and the river Eider showing three sluices: No. 1. Die Wester Schleuse. 2. Mittel. 3. Oster. The difficulty of storming the place will be seen, from there being only the one road marked below, across the marshy ground. It is now all under water in front of the town...Friedrichstadt...was, in 1620, a Friesland village, called Seebiil. Duke Frederick III. of Schleswig-Holstein, being applied to by a number of fugitives from Holland, persecuted Arminians, or remonstrants, permitted them to settle in this village, with full liberty to retain their own religious faith and forms. They reclaimed the neighbouring lands from the river by large dykes and sluices in the Dutch manner...The Lutheran Church has, it is said, been set on fire by the bombardment, and was burning when the last accounts left'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This map print depicts the strategic layout of Friedrichstadt, a town located in the region of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, during the Schleswig-Holstein War in 1850. The creator of this map remains unknown, but it was originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The map highlights the town's defensive structures, including three sluices labeled as 'No. 1. Die Wester Schleuse,' '2. Mittel,' and '3. Oster.' The map also illustrates the River Eider, which surrounds the town, making access to it a significant challenge due to the limited road access across the marshy ground. Friedrichstadt holds historical significance as it was once a Friesland village called Seebiil. In 1620, Duke Frederick III. of Schleswig-Holstein welcomed a group of persecuted Arminians, or Remonstrants, from Holland, granting them the freedom to practice their religious beliefs. The settlers reclaimed the surrounding lands from the river using Dutch techniques, constructing large dykes and sluices. However, the peaceful existence of the town was disrupted during the Schleswig-Holstein War. The map indicates that the Lutheran Church was set on fire during the bombardment and was still burning at the time of the last available reports. The town's strategic location and defensive structures made it a formidable fortress, making the conflict a significant turning point in the region's history.
