Scenes in Mammoth Cave, 1874. Creator: Alfred Waud

Scenes in Mammoth Cave, 1874. Tourists visit limestone caverns in Kentucky, USA, the longest cave system known in the world: The Lovers Leap; The Altar; The Star Chamber; The Dead Sea; The Vestibule, Kentucky Cliffs; on the Lake, The Giants Coffin. The next halt is in another wide room, in the middle of which rests an immense rock, in the exact shape of a sarcophagus. This is called the Giants Coffin, and the guide, leaving you alone for a minute or two, reappears on its lid, his form, shadowed on the wall, imitating all his movements. Above the shadow you will notice the figure of an ant-eater, one of the many shapes with which the ceilings of the caverns are adorned by the oxide of iron. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. This print takes us back to the year 1874, capturing the awe-inspiring scenes within Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. Renowned artist Alfred Waud skillfully depicts various limestone caverns that make up the longest cave system known in the world. In this particular image, tourists can be seen exploring different sections of the cave. The first scene is "The Lovers Leap" where visitors stand on a precipice overlooking a breathtaking view. Moving along, we encounter "The Altar" an enchanting spot adorned with natural formations resembling an altar. Further into our journey lies "The Star Chamber" a celestial wonderland created by nature's handiwork. As we traverse deeper, we come across "The Dead Sea" and its mysterious waters that seem to hold untold secrets. Continuing onward, we enter "The Vestibule" nestled amidst towering Kentucky Cliffs. Here rests an immense rock shaped like a sarcophagus - aptly named "The Giants Coffin". Our guide momentarily leaves us alone before reappearing atop its lid, casting his shadow against the wall and mimicking his every move.
