Satellite, Pioneer I, Reconstructed Replica, 1963. Creator

This is a replica of a Pioneer satellite intended to orbit the moon. Pioneer 1 was launched on October 11, 1958, but the final velocity was insufficient to escape the earths gravity. The resulting trajectory took the satellite to an altitude of 70, 700 mi. During the flight, the spacecraft transmitted 43 hours of scientific data. It burned up upon reentry into the earths atmosphere two days later. This replica was assembled in 1963 by the prime contractor, Space Technology Laboratories Inc (TRW) from original parts that failed to meet flight specifications. It was displayed at the Los Angeles Museum of Science until February 1964 and then donated to the Smithsonian Institution by TRW. It was displayed in the NASM Satellites gallery from 1976 to 1983, loaned to the Scottish Museum from May to December 1984, and then was part of a SI Traveling exhibition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a reconstructed replica of the Pioneer I satellite, an iconic symbol of early space exploration. Created in 1963 by the esteemed prime contractor Space Technology Laboratories Inc (TRW), this replica was meticulously assembled from original parts that did not meet flight specifications. Originally intended to orbit the moon, Pioneer 1 was launched on October 11,1958, but unfortunately fell short of escaping Earth's gravity due to insufficient velocity. Despite this setback, the satellite embarked on a remarkable trajectory that took it to an altitude of 70,700 miles above our planet's surface. During its brief flight, Pioneer 1 transmitted an impressive 43 hours of invaluable scientific data before meeting its fiery demise upon reentry into Earth's atmosphere just two days later. After being displayed at the Los Angeles Museum of Science until February 1964, TRW generously donated this reconstructed replica to the prestigious Smithsonian Institution. It found its place in the NASM Satellites gallery from 1976 to 1983 and even traveled across continents as part of a SI Traveling exhibition. Adorned with adhesive stickers and tape showcasing technological details such as aluminum construction and shell laminated plastic components, this photograph encapsulates America's pioneering spirit in space exploration during the vibrant era of the sixties. A testament to human ingenuity and determination, it serves as a reminder of our relentless pursuit for knowledge beyond our earthly confines through advancements in technology and scientific discovery.
