His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, 1862. Creator: Unknown
His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, 1862. Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, married Princess Alice, a daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, on 1 July 1862....we know that Prince Louis of Hesse was the deliberate choice of [Albert] the Prince Consort; and on his judgment in the selection of a husband for his child, as in most other things, this country reposes the utmost confidence. We therefore accept personally the stranger amongst us, readily and cheerfully, upon the faith of him who chose and approved of him as one who was to have held the nearest and most delicate relations towards him'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt is depicted in formal attire, wearing a grand ducal uniform adorned with orders and medals. The image captures the prince's serious and confident demeanor, with a well-groomed beard and sideburns adding to his regal appearance. Prince Louis of Hesse, later known as Grand Duke Ludwig IV, was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on October 12, 1837. In 1862, he married Princess Alice, a beloved daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of the United Kingdom. The royal wedding was a significant event in both British and German history, as Prince Albert had personally chosen Prince Louis as a suitable husband for his daughter. The Illustrated London News reported on the occasion, stating, "we know that Prince Louis of Hesse was the deliberate choice of [Albert] the Prince Consort; and on his judgment in the selection of a husband for his child, as in most other things, this country reposes the utmost confidence." The British people welcomed the new prince as a respected and esteemed member of their royal family, and he was affectionately known as "Prince Guy" due to his friendly and approachable nature. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, is an engraved representation of the prince's appearance on the day of his wedding. The image is a testament to the close relationship between the British and German royal families during this period and the international significance of the royal wedding.
