EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Robert Cecil, the 1st Earl of Salisbury, a prominent English statesman during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The son of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who served as Elizabeth I's chief advisor, Robert Cecil followed in his father's footsteps and became Secretary of State in 1590. After his father's passing in 1598, he assumed the role of Queen Elizabeth's senior minister until her death in 1603. The portrait captures Cecil with an air of authority and sophistication. Dressed impeccably in period attire, he exudes confidence befitting a man entrusted with such crucial responsibilities. The intricate ruff around his neck adds a touch of elegance to his appearance. Taken from R. J. Lea Ltd. 's Chairman Miniature cigarette cards series released in 1912, this print is based on an original painting by John De Critz the Elder. It beautifully encapsulates the essence of this influential figure from England's history. Cecil played a pivotal role during times of political transition as he continued serving as Secretary of State under King James I after Elizabeth I passed away. His contributions to governance earned him great respect among both aristocracy and commoners alike. This photograph serves as a testament to Robert Cecil's enduring legacy as one of England's most notable statesmen during the Tudor era and beyond.
