EDITORS COMMENTS
This colorized print showcases the historic moment of Richmond at Bosworth in 1902, immortalizing the Battle of Bosworth Field that took place on August 22,1485. The artist behind this masterpiece is Patten Wilson, who skillfully captured the essence of this pivotal event in English history. Intriguingly, it portrays Richard III, the last Yorkist king of England from 1483, kneeling on the battlefield amidst a tumultuous clash between the houses of York and Lancaster. This battle marked a turning point in the Wars of Roses (1455-1487), as Richard was slain and Henry Tudor emerged victorious to become Henry VII - England's first Tudor monarch. The image evokes a sense of solemnity and tragedy as Richard III meets his untimely demise while donning his regal armor. The crown he once wore now passes to his Lancastrian adversary, symbolizing a shift in power and dynastic rule. Originally featured in Charles Dickens' "A Child's History of England" published by J. M. Dent & Co. , New York in 1902, this colorized version breathes new life into Wilson's original engraving. It serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation that transports us back to one of England's most significant battles fought during the fifteenth century. Through this print, we are reminded not only of Richard III's tragic end but also how history can be brought vividly to life through artistry and imagination.
