Reindeer Chukchi, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating ethnographic image taken from Sheet 57 of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," or "Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. This photograph, created by the Russian artist Zakharov, is part of a two-volume work dedicated to Tsar Alexander II to commemorate the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. Volume 1 of this comprehensive ethnographic study consists of 62 color illustrations, each depicting various ethnic groups from across the vast Russian Empire in their traditional attire. This volume also includes a fold-out table detailing the size of the populations of these groups in the empire's major cities and a colored-coded ethnographic map. The present image showcases the Reindeer Chukchi, an indigenous people inhabiting the northern parts of Siberia and the Russian Far East. The Chukchi are known for their reliance on reindeer herding for their livelihood and subsistence. In this photograph, a Chukchi man is shown wearing a fur coat, fur hat, and leather boots, while a woman is dressed in a long, fur parka, adorned with intricate beadwork and fringes. Both individuals are shown with their reindeer, which are an integral part of their daily life. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural diversity of the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century and the meticulous efforts of ethnographer Gustav-Fedor Pauli to document and preserve the traditions of its various peoples. Pauli, a German immigrant to Russia, dedicated his life to the study of the ethnic groups within the empire, and this work reflects the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the time.
