Purgatory, 1872. Creator: Frederick William Quartley
Purgatory, 1872. Cliffs on the Atlantic coast of Rhode Island, USA: precipitous rocks, with the deep and sharp-lined fissure... The opening in the cliff extends one hundred and sixty feet, and is fifty feet deep at the outer edge. It is from eight to fourteen feet wide at the top, and from two to twenty at the bottom. It was once supposed that the water at the base was unfathomable; but at low tide it is actually not more than ten feet in depth. It was formerly the prevailing theory that this fissure was occasioned by a sudden upheaving of the rock; but, after careful examination, Professor Silliman came to the opinion that it was probably formed by the gradual eating away of the softer portions of the stone at a very early period. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Purgatory, 1872" takes us back in time to the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast in Rhode Island, USA. Created by Frederick William Quartley, this image captures the essence of nature's raw beauty and power. The photograph showcases precipitous rocks with a deep and sharp-lined fissure that stretches an impressive one hundred and sixty feet. At its outer edge, it plunges fifty feet deep into the ocean below. The opening varies in width from eight to fourteen feet at the top and two to twenty feet at the bottom. Initially believed to be an unfathomable abyss of water, Professor Silliman's careful examination revealed that during low tide, its depth is merely ten feet. Contrary to previous theories suggesting a sudden upheaval of rock formation caused this remarkable fissure, Professor Silliman proposed that it was more likely formed through gradual erosion over time. Taken from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1872, this print transports us back to a period when exploration and discovery were paramount. It serves as a testament to mankind's fascination with nature's wonders while reminding us of our humble place within its grandeur. Frederick William Quartley skillfully captured both the majesty and mystery hidden within Purgatory's cliffs—a timeless piece that continues to captivate viewers even today.
