EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Portrait of Marie-Adelaide of Savoy, 1697" showcases the exquisite artistry of Francois de Troy. The subject of this painting is Marie Adelaide of Savoy, the eldest daughter of Victor Amadeus II and Anne Marie of Orleans. In 1696, she was betrothed to Louis, Duke of Burgundy, Dauphin of France as part of the Treaty of Turin. Marie Adelaide's elegance and regal demeanor are beautifully captured in this oil painting. Dressed in a resplendent grey royal gown adorned with intricate details and delicate lace accents, she exudes grace and sophistication befitting her noble lineage. Her hair is elegantly styled up, showcasing her radiant face and emphasizing her status as a princess. Tragically, both Marie Adelaide and her husband succumbed to measles in 1712. However, their legacy lives on through their youngest son who would later become King Louis XV of France. Currently housed at the State A Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, this remarkable piece serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship that defined French portraiture during the seventeenth century. It offers us a glimpse into an era characterized by opulence and refinement while immortalizing one woman's place within it.
