EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "A Plan of Rotherhithe, 1755" from the year 1912. The origins of this detailed ward plan can be traced back to John Stow's renowned work, "A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster" first published in 1598 and 1603. Commissioned by Richard Blome towards the end of Stow's life for a proposed survey, these plates were eventually included in John Strype's edition of Stow's Survey printed in 1720. The image captures an outdoor scene with the bustling cityscape and River Thames as its backdrop. The urban setting exudes a sense of historical charm, showcasing London's rich heritage. The monochrome black and white aesthetic adds depth to the photograph, emphasizing architectural details such as building facades and divisions within the city. This print not only serves as a visual representation but also offers valuable insights into British geography during the eighteenth century. It provides viewers with a glimpse into Rotherhithe's layout, highlighting its significance as a geographical feature along the River Thames. The inclusion of Sir Walter Besant's book title suggests that this print is part of his publication titled "London - South of the Thames". As we delve into this piece, we are transported back in time to explore Britain's past through artistry and literature.
