Oval portrait of a woman in a Chaghtai hat, c. 1740-50. Creator: Unknown
Oval portrait of a woman in a Chaghtai hat, c. 1740-50. The tall, flat-topped hat is an element of the native dress of the Mughals from eastern Uzbekistan. Of mixed Turkic and Mongol ethnicities, they spoke a Turkic language known as Chaghatai. Chaghatai refers to the name of the son of the Mongol Chingiz (Genghis) Khan, who ruled this area of Central Asia from 1246 to 1282. This womans hat has been studded with jewels and strings of pearls. The portrait jewel format that was once reserved for the emperor has now been expanded to include ladies of the court. The woman holds a jade wine cup and wears a draped upper garment with a woven or embroidered border similar to the fragment on display at the left

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century portrait print showcases an elegant woman adorned in a Chaghtai hat, originating from the Mughals of eastern Uzbekistan. The Chaghtai people were of mixed Turkic and Mongol descent, speaking the Turkic language known as Chaghatai. This exquisite headpiece, characterized by its tall and flat-topped structure, has been meticulously embellished with dazzling jewels and strings of pearls. Intriguingly, this portrait format was traditionally reserved for emperors but has now expanded to include esteemed ladies of the court. The opulence displayed in this artwork reflects the wealth and grandeur associated with Mughal culture during this period. The woman depicted holds a jade wine cup delicately in her hand, symbolizing refinement and sophistication. Her attire consists of a draped upper garment featuring a woven or embroidered border reminiscent of a fragment showcased on display at her left side. Created using opaque watercolor and gold on paper technique, this painting is housed within the prestigious collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art. Although the artist responsible for crafting such an exquisite piece remains unknown to us today, their talent shines through every brushstroke. Heritage Art/Heritage Images presents this remarkable print that encapsulates not only the beauty but also provides insight into India's rich heritage and cultural diversity during the Mughal era.
