Opening of the North Devon Railway - Arrival of the Train at Barnstaple, 1854. The opening of a further portion of this Railway will, doubtless, be fully appreciated by tourists in search of the picturesque, during the present season. The line follows the valley of the Taw, and will be of the greatest value to a large agricultural district, both for the conveyance of manures and farm produce; at the same time it will open to the tourist an easy access to the delightful scenery...of the north coast...Upon the arrival of the train at the Barnstaple Station, a congratulatory address was read by Mr. L Bencraft, the Town-clerk...The Freemasons of the district, in full costume, were assembled on the platform; and corn, oil, and wine having been poured out as an oblation, the Provincial Grand Chaplain offered up a prayer for the prosperity of the undertaking'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the North Devon Railway's arrival at Barnstaple in 1854. The North Devon Railway, an engineering marvel of its time, was a significant addition to the transportation network of the region. The line, which follows the picturesque valley of the Taw River, was highly anticipated by tourists seeking new and scenic destinations. The railway was not only beneficial for the agricultural community, enabling the easy transportation of manures and farm produce, but also opened up access to the stunning north coast and its delightful scenery. Upon the arrival of the train at Barnstaple Station, an air of excitement filled the air. A congratulatory address was read by Mr. L Bencraft, the Town-clerk, expressing appreciation for the completion of this important infrastructure project. The Freemasons of the district, dressed in their full regalia, were present on the platform to offer their blessings and support. In a symbolic gesture, corn, oil, and wine were poured out as an oblation, and the Provincial Grand Chaplain offered up a prayer for the prosperity of the railway undertaking. This photograph, taken from 'Illustrated London News' in 1854, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the community's pride and joy as they welcomed the North Devon Railway to their town.
