Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

Obdorsk Ostyaks, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photographic print depicting a group of Obdorsk Ostyaks, an indigenous people of Western Siberia, Russia. This image is taken from sheet 42 of the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," or "Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia," published in Saint Petersburg in 1862. The work was dedicated to Tsar Alexander II and was the brainchild of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. The two-volume work consisted of 62 colored illustrations, including this one, and was a comprehensive ethnographic record of the diverse population of the Russian Empire at the time. The illustrations were accompanied by a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and their populations in various cities, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map. The Obdorsk Ostyaks are shown in their traditional attire, which includes fur coats, leggings, and headdresses. They are believed to have lived in the Ob River area, near the Ural Mountains, and were known for their semi-nomadic lifestyle, hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding. The photograph offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these people, who were part of the rich cultural tapestry of the Russian Empire. The "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" was a significant contribution to the field of anthropology and ethnography, reflecting the state of knowledge of the 1860s. The work provided a detailed record of the various ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and more, making it an invaluable resource for scholars and researchers. This photograph of the Obdorsk Ostyaks is a testament to the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the role of ethnographic documentation in understanding the diversity and complexity of human societies.
