Nice New, A well known character at Reading, 1822. Creator: Robert Cooper
Nice New, A well known character at Reading, 1822. Portrait of an eccentric street peddler of Reading in Berkshire, who carried unwieldy baskets on each side being always stored with cakes and other delicacies for children...his baskets were so large, that they used to engage the whole of the foot-path, to the annoyance of the other passengers. His name came from his cry of " Nice new! Nice new!" with sometimes the addition of " Here they be, two sizes bigger than last week". From " Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation", Vol. III, by Henry Wilson. [J. Robins and Co. Albion Press, London, 1821]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a well-known character from Reading in 1822, known as Nice New. The eccentric street peddler was famous for his unwieldy baskets, which were always filled with cakes and other delicacies for children. His large baskets took up the entire footpath, much to the annoyance of other passersby. Nice New earned his name from his distinctive cry of "Nice new! Nice new!" sometimes followed by "Here they be, two sizes bigger than last week". This portrait by Robert Cooper showcases the ragged appearance of this peculiar man who made a living selling treats on the streets of Berkshire. Taken from Henry Wilson's book "Wonderful Characters: Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every Age and Nation" this engraving provides a glimpse into 19th-century Britain. It portrays not only an occupation but also a concept - that even in difficult times, people found ways to make a living through unconventional means. The image reflects both the hardships faced by individuals like Nice New and their resilience in finding unique solutions to survive. Through this photograph, we are transported back in time to witness an extraordinary figure who left an indelible mark on Reading's history.
