Near view of one of the Shiant Isles, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, 1829. Artist

Near view of one of the Shiant Isles, Outer Hebrides, Scotland, 1829. The islands are notable for their geology, with cliffs consisting of great columns of dolerite, formed when volcanic lava seeped into layers of sedimentary rock and cooled. The softer sedimentary rock was later eroded away, leaving the columns of dolerite behind. The same processes formed the similar structures on the island of Staffa and at the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. From A Voyage Around Great Britain Undertaken between the Years 1814 and 1825 by William Daniell. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a near view of one of the Shiant Isles in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, taken in 1829 by artist William Daniell. The islands are renowned for their remarkable geology, characterized by towering cliffs composed of magnificent columns of dolerite. These columns were formed when volcanic lava infiltrated layers of sedimentary rock and solidified over time. As erosion gradually wore away the softer sedimentary rock, it left behind these striking formations. Similar geological processes can be observed on Staffa Island and at the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. In this image, we witness a serene scene with calm waters surrounding the island as a flock of birds gracefully soars above. A sailboat peacefully glides through the sea nearby, adding to the tranquility and beauty of this picturesque landscape. The historical significance and scientific value captured in this engraving from William Daniell's "A Voyage Around Great Britain" make it an invaluable addition to any collection or study related to British geography, geology, or natural history. This nineteenth-century artwork not only portrays Scotland's stunning outer Hebrides but also provides insights into how geological forces shape our planet's landscapes over vast periods.
